Recommendations for Change to Improve the Quality of
Post-mortem Forensic Science Evidence Associated with Queensland
Inquests and Trials.

Submission to Magistrate Mr Michael Halliday.
In August-September 2001, Magistrate Halliday, as Brisbane
Coroner, conducted an Inquest into the death of our son Mitchell
Craig Collins, who died on 16.12.00.
This submission resulted from our examination of evidence tendered to
Queensland Courts in relation to Mitch’s death. This five-year
examination included over four years study of toxicological,
pathological and gastroenterological papers by Patrick Collins,
assisted by Desley Collins.
Patrick Collins B.Ed. M.Ed.Studies, a
retired psychologist, was registered to practise in Queensland
until 2003 (Registration No 833894). He was a student counsellor
at the QIT (1976) and, variously, a lecturer and student
counsellor at the BCAE Kelvin Grove (1977-88). Since 1989 he has
pursued other interests. These included writing Goodbye
Bussamarai: the Mandandanji Land War, Southern Queensland
1842-1852, UQP, Brisbane 2002, for which he received a
special award from the Centre for Australian Cultural Studies,
Canberra, for “An Outstanding Contribution to Australian Culture

Desley Collins B.Ed. Dip.Teaching (Primary
& Special Ed) is a retired teacher of hearing impaired children.
She was Teacher in Charge of Special Education units at Junction
Park and Aspley, and also Acting Senior Teacher in Charge at
Yeerongpilly Special Education Developmental Unit.
